Babich Lone Tree Merlot Cabernet 2010
The Lone Tree label is exclusive to the New Zealand market and is mostly sold in restaurants. From our estate-owned Irongate vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels region, we combine soft Merlot with robust Cabernet Sauvignon resulting in a full flavoured dry red with easy drinking appeal.

Production Notes:
The Merlot was harvested in mid April, and the Cabernet Sauvignon in late April. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel tank with frequent pump-overs and plungings to ensure good colour and tannin extraction. The blend was assembled in late 2010 and spent a further six months in oak prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes:
Brambly forest fruits, plums, leather and cedar notes present on the nose. A lovely soft, sweet fruited entry of ripe plums leads into a generous palate with a pleasing warmth and fine structure. Tobacco and spice, and more plums and berry fruits complete this happy experience.

"51% Merlot and 49% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged in seasoned oak. Bright, dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with purple hues, this has a firm, intense and concentrated nose of blackcurrants and mint, along with some oak spice, the aromas showing some lift and good definition. On the palate, this is soft and rounded with cool blackcurrant fruit, displaying some fresh herbs and hints of stalk. The acidity is discreet and well-judged, and the tannin extraction is modest, but provides drive and length of flavour. This is a soft, mellow and balanced red wine with fruit in the cooler spectrum. Drink with herb-marinated red meat dishes over the next 2+ years."
