Babich Family Estates Cowslip Valley Riesling 2011
This wine from our Cowslip Valley Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley is grown on a cool and sometimes frost prone site with moderately fertile silt soils overlying deep layers of free draining gravel. Good body and complex flavours on the palate are typical for Rieslings grown on this superior site.
Winemaker Notes
Region:
Waihopai Valley, Marlborough
Recommended Food:
An excellent partner to a wide range of foods, ideal with Asian dishes, or try it with mussel and kumara patties, drizzled with home-made lime-spiked mayonnaise.
Recommended Cellaring:
0-6 years
Production Notes:
These grapes were harvested at low Brix. The free run juice was fermented separately in stainless steel tanks to retain aromatic varietal character, with various different yeasts and at different temperatures. The ferments were stopped before completion to retain the level of natural sweetness that perfectly balances the acidity.
Technical Notes:
Alcohol: 12.0%
TA: 8g/l
pH: 3.15
Residual Sugar: 8.5g/l
Tasting Notes:
Attractive aromas of orange zest, wild flowers, red apple and mineral notes greet the taster. The palate is layered and juicy with ruby grapefruit, fejoa and apple. Lovely spicy herbal notes entwined the fruit and add intrigue. This finely structured wine is off dry with a beautiful acid balance, crisp and persistent finish.

Wine Writer Reviews
"Brilliant straw-yellow with gold-green hues to the colour. This softly presented, gentle bouquet of attractive, pure lime aromas. Dryish to taste, this is an elegantly proportioned wine with ethereal lime and white floral fruit flavours. The palate is balanced with soft acidity and is very smooth and seamless in texture, exuding lovely harmony. Fine nuances of minerals and limes mark the moderately long finish. This is a wine of delicacy and softness, and will be ideal as an aperitif over the next 3-4+ years."

"The debut 2011 vintage was estate-grown in the Waihopai Valley. Mouthfilling, it is ripe and rounded, with generous, citrusy, limey and spicy flavours, in a medium-dry style, with excellent balance and depth. It’s quite forward in its appeal; drink now or cellar."

"Pale greenish. Lightly fragrant. Medium-dry palate displays ripe lemon and grapefruit flavours with some concentration and complexity. Quite firm and stoutly bodied Riesling, with lots of phenolic grip and balancing acidity to carry it."
