BABICH MARLBOROUGH PINOT NOIR 2005

Overview:
A soft and supple wine displaying good varietal character.

Region:
Marlborough

Winemaker:
Adam Hazeldine

Recommended Food:
The soft and smooth nature of this wine means it is a very versatile food wine that will complement most meals - great with roast duck.

Recommended Cellaring:
2 to 4 years

Production Notes:
The various parcels of fruit were harvested at optimum ripeness and fermented in open vats. After an extended period of maceration the various batches were drained off skins and put into new and old French oak barriques. After 11 months the wines were assessed and blended. This wine is a blend of five clones, 5, 777, 667, 114 & 115.

Tasting Notes:
Finely focused raspberry/ plum-cherry introduce the bouquet and are soon joined by touches of cedar and sweet vanilla with a good dash of spice.
The palate is a pleasing and intense amalgam of sweet red fruits, spice and earth. This is a wine of medium weight and creamy texture well supported by fine coating tannins with a strong and lingering finish.

Reviews:

"Very good Pinot fruit statement with a warm texture. Youthful and with more to come out, this wine is showing heaps of potential, lots of spine and the ability to work very well with food."
3.5 STARS
-Winestate Magazine, Peter Saunders, November, 2006

"Showing good 'pinosity' (Pinot Noir varietal character), this is a medium-bodied style, finely structured, with plenty of ripe, plummy, spicy flavour, some savoury complexity and a dry, well-rounded finish."

"French oak aged, medium bodied. Plenty of ripe, cherryish plumy, spicy flavour, some savoury complexity and a dry well rounded finish."
-Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines, 2007

"What a great starter for people who are not familiar with this red wine variety. A middleweight from Marlborough that has all the essential elements - plums and cherries, spice and an earthy, savoury undertone. Warm and smooth. Will go well with food."

"Babich is one of New Zealand's oldest and largest family-owned wineries.  It has vineyard holdings in several parts of the country and produces a wide variety of wines under different labels.  The 2005 Babich Pinot Noir, one of its premium wines, is medium ruby in color and offers aromas cherry, anise, strawberry and plum.  On the palate it displays ripe cherry and plum fruit, spice and heavy oak flavors.  It has good tannins and grip on the finish."

"Well fruited and tasty showing no overt oak; an appealing wine, showing some vibrancy and ready to be enjoyed with a wide range of food styles."
