BABICH MARLBOROUGH PINOT NOIR 2006

Overview:
Marlborough’s diurnal temperature fluctuations during ripening are ideal for the Pinot Noir grape. As an early ripening variety, it benefits from the warm days, high sunshine hours and cool nights that develop intense flavour while maintaining balanced acidity in the fruit.

Region:
Marlborough

Winemaker:
Adam Hazeldine

Recommended Food:
It goes well with a stir-fry of cubed lamb and eggplant, also makes a good partner for a steak and mushroom pie.

Recommended Cellaring:
2 to 5 years

Production Notes:
The various parcels of fruit were harvested at optimum ripeness and fermented in open vats. After an extended period of maceration the various batches were drained off skins and put into new and old oak barriques. After 11 months the wines were assessed and blended. This wine is a blend of numerous clones, 5, 777, 667, Abel, 13, AM10/5,114 & 115.

Tasting Notes:
Primarily red fruits on the nose but enough warm earthy-spicy notes hint at the generosity of the palate. In the mouth the wine is of medium weight with pleasingly textural fine and coating tannins. The fresh red fruit found on the bouquet are joined by warmer/darker plummy flavours that linger on the spicy finish.

Awards:
SILVER AWARD

Reviews:
"Moderate red with a light, cherry red rim. Fragrant with a delicate cherry note on high and a light softness. Light and fresh on impact with gentle cherry/raspberry flavours. Very pretty wine with charm and rather nice balance. A drinker, but it will becoming fascinating with a couple more years in bottle."
-Keith Stewart, Sommnet Website, April, 2007

"Mid to light in colour and somewhat sweaty on the nose.  Displays some sweet cherry-like flavour and a touch of vanilla oak."
-WineNZ, Winter 2007

"It's aromatic on the nose showing ripe cherries and mushroom complexity.  The palate is fruity yet well integrated with fresh acidity and firm tannins.  An attractive wine to enjoy now.  At it's best: now to end of 2008."
4 STARS
-Wine Orbit Magazine, Dec 2007

"This wine shows a good Pinot Noir character in a medium-bodied style.  The 2006 vintage is cherryish and spicy, with slightly earthy touches and supple tannins.  It's an attractive, drink-young proposition."
-Michael Cooper's A Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wines 2008

"Light in colour and style this is nonetheless a good, pleasant drink. There are good berry aromas and decent fruit concentration through the palate tied to firm tannins and acidity."
TiZWine Magazine, Feb 2008

"An excellent starter-pack  introduction to a New Zealand classic.  A great smell with just a hint of earthiness, savoury and slightly spicy with a creamy texture."
-Irish Examiner - Jan 2008

"Some pleasant, bright fruit on nose.  Palate  is straightforward yet pretty showing boysenberry, cherry and some dried herb."
-WineNZ Magazine, Winter 2008
