BABICH MARLBOROUGH RIESLING 2006

Overview:
An excellent (and eventless) summer and autumn produced a well ripened crop in excellent condition.

Grapes:

100% Riesling

Region:
Marlborough

Winemaker:
Adam Hazeldine

Recommended Food:
An excellent partner to a wide range of foods, ideal with Asian dishes, or try it with mussel and kumara patties, drizzled with home-made lime-spiked mayonnaise.

Recommended Cellaring:
0-5 years

Production Notes:
Grapes were harvested at just over 22 Brix. The juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain aromatic varietal character, with various different yeasts and at different temperatures. The ferments were stopped before completion to retain a level of natural sweetness. The young wine was left on its yeast lees until blending in August.

Tasting Notes:
Floral orange blossom and lime/ citrus with a hint of slate on the nose. The palate is finely balanced, delicate yet intense with juicy lime/ lemon, green apples and an intriguing mineral note that lingers with the fruit. Well judged acidity lends focus and a dry finish.

Awards:

SILVER MEDAL
-Air New Zealand Wine Awards, 2006

Reviews:
"Pure and fresh.  Limey with a stream of mineral and orange blossom through the middle.  Very clean fruit, beautiful acidity and grapefruit notes with a long finish and plenty of upfront, vibrant fruit.  It could last for up to five years."
-Jane Parkinson, Wine & Spirit Magazine, June 2007

"Sturdy, fairly dry Riesling, still youthful and best will come late 2007, into 2009.  Lots of good fruit in behind to open and expand."
-Peter Saunders, A Guide to New Zealand Wine 2007

"At it's best, this is a beautifully crafted, flavour-packed wine with great drinkability.  A single-vineyard wine, grown at Rapaura, the 2006 vintage is a medium-dry style, less concentrated than some past releases, but ripe, juicy and finely balanced for easy drinking."
-Michael Cooper's A Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wines 2008

"Dryish, slightly toasty wine, full bodied and citrusy, with a minerally streak and good depth and vigour."
-Winestate Magazine, March 2008

"The 2006 Dry Riesling has an attractive nose of apple blossom and white flowers with a fresh, zingy- palate and vibrant refreshing finish."
89 POINTS
-Wine Advocate Issue #176, Neal Martin, April, 2008

"Delicate citrus aromas became more pronounced the longer this wine is open as did the lime, honey and mineral flavours.  The finish is clean and crisp."
-TiZwine.com, June 2008

"This is a luscious-tasting Marlborough Riesling with the apple and lime flavours that are characteristic of good riesling."
-Joelle Thomson, The Indispensable Wine Guide

"Toasty, mature bouquet.  Shows some complexity on the palate, with one judge finding it "punchy and crisp, with rich, citrusy flavours."
-Winestate Magazine, March 2009

"Apple and citrus flavors enhanced with floral and herbal notes made this a good match with the spicy curry.  "I like the mango-lime flavors in the wine with the curry," George Howald said. "it's a serious wine lover's wine," Paul Pinnell said, adding that "it's not for everyone."  He liked its "oily petrol quality, good weight and dry finish." James Tidwell praised the wine's acidity. "it's an old world style wine from New Zealand," Greg Kassanoff said."
- The Dallas Morning News - US, April 29th 2009

"Grapes were sourced from the Rapaura and Waihopai districts in the Wairau Valley.  It's nicely fragrant showing floral and lemon characters on the nose.  A lovely dry palate is finely textured with well harmonised crisp acidity.  A fine and elegant Riesling."
