BABICH MARLBOROUGH PINOT NOIR 2007

Overview:
Marlborough’s diurnal temperature fluctuations during ripening are ideal for the Pinot Noir grape. As an early ripening variety, it benefits from the warm days, high sunshine hours and cool nights that develop intense flavour while maintaining balanced acidity in the fruit.

Region:
Marlborough

Winemaker:
Adam Hazeldine

Recommended Food:
It goes well with a stir-fry of cubed lamb and eggplant, also makes a good partner for a steak and mushroom pie.

Recommended Cellaring:
1 - 5 years

Production Notes:
This wine is a blend of various parcels of fruit from the extensive Babich vineyards in
Marlborough. Fruit was harvested at optimum ripeness and fermented in open vats. After an extended period of maceration the various batches were drained off skins and put into new and old oak barriques. After 11 months the wines were assessed and blended.

Tasting Notes:
This is an elegant wine, with a lifted cherry / plum nose complemented by mushroom and forest floor aromas. The wine is of medium weight with attractive red fruits, cedar spice and thyme notes. A beautifully balanced wine with fine tannins and a lingering finish.

Awards:
Gold Star Award
-Irish Wine Show 2008

Reviews:
"This 2007 Marlborough Pinot from Babich really is a thoroughly enjoyable quaff. Packed with berries and spice on the nose, its mid bodied but sturdy on the palate, showing plenty of fruit in the middle and finishing up with spice and leather."
-Reviewed for Wine Trade Online by Colin Ford - July 2008

"This wine shows Pinot Noir characters in a fresh, medium-bodied style, enjoyable young.  The 2007 vintage is a ruby-hued and supple, with cherryish/plum flavours, a touch of toasty oak and gentle tannins. Price right."
-Michael Cooper's Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wine 2009

"Firm berry fruit aromas are superseded by decent raspberry fruit flavours and rounded tannins. Simple, straightforward and enjoyable."
-TiZ Wine.com, Feb 2009

"A good pinot noir for after work drinks. This is a light, soft, fruity little red, and good value for money."
-Mindfood Magazine, Joelle Thomson - May 2009

"Visit Marlborough, and you’d swear there was nothing but sauvignon blanc. Not so, as this lovely pinot noir shows. Expect well-extracted and –defined flavours, a broad seam of refreshing acidity, and soft tannins. It’s great with grilled duck breast or Atlantic salmon."

-Wine Pointer Magazine, Rod Phillips,, 24 Aug 2009

"This showcases good expression of a value-driven Marlborough Pinot with firm and focused aromas and flavours. Flavours of ripe cranberry, pomegranate and red currant stream throughout, melding with polished tannin and hints of toasty oak. It’s light to medium bodied and generously textured with a clean finish. This shines with food; pair with spaghetti squash laced with spicy tomato sauce."

"The nose is gently fragrant displaying strawberry, red cherry and spice characters. It's light and juicy on the palate with crisp acidity and gently drying tannins. An easy Pinot with vibrant fruit notes."
