BABICH WINEMAKERS' RESERVE PINOT NOIR 2007
Grapes:
100% Pinot Noir
Region:
Marlborough
Winemaker:
Adam Hazeldine
Recommended Food:
A good partner for a char-grilled Scotch fillet steak topped with grilled flat mushrooms.
Recommended Cellaring:
1-5 years
Production Notes:
Select parcels of fruit were crop thinned at verasion (berry colour change) and harvested at optimum ripeness. These parcels were cold soaked and fermented in open vats. After an extended period of maceration the wine was drained off skins and put into new and old barriques. After 11 months the wines were assessed and blended then returned to oak for a further two months.
Tasting Notes:
The wine displays lifted spice and a generous amount of red fruit. The palate has plenty of intense fruit and a rich creamy / smokey undertone, which aids the sweet / savoury balance of the wine. The wine finishes with spicy notes and lovely oak integration.

Reviews:
"Floral bouquet, with some spicy complexity. Fresh and youthful, with excellent density and ripeness of cherryish, spicy flavours. Supple and long, with underlying tannins and obvious aging potential."
-Winestate Magazine, April 2008
-Winestate Magazine, Annual Issue, Jan 2009
"Light fruity notes on nose followed by a clean, straightforward palate of sweet strawberry and raspberry notes. Well structured with good fruit intensity through the palate."
-WineNZ Magazine, Winter 2008
"This Winemakers Reserve Pinot Noir 2007 shows light, fruity notes on the nose that are followed by a clean, straightforward palate of sweet strawberry and raspberry flavours. Here is a well-structured wine showing good fruit intensity that persists right through the palate."
-Reviewed for Wine Trade Online by Colin Ford - July 2008
"Floral, with some spicy complexity, the 2007 vintage (****) was matured in French oak barriques (35 per cent new). Fresh and youthful, with excellent density and ripeness of cherryish, spicy flavours, it is supple and long, with underlying tannins and obvious aging potential."
-Michael Cooper's Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wine 2009
"Forward, slightly developed wine with very good depth of cherry/spice flavours, showing some savoury complexity."
-Winestate Magazine, March 2009
"The excellent soft, ripe berry aromas lead to a fruit driven palate with soft acidity and rounded tannins. Not overly complicated but much enjoyed."
-TiZ Wine.com, Feb 2009
"Stepping right up to a softer, spicier, more concentrated red, this is a beautifully full-bodied wine. It bodes well for Marlborough’s pinot noir future too."
-Mindfood.com, Joelle Thomson - May 2009
"A nicely lifted nose showing red plum, cured meat and spicy oak characters. It’s juicy and rounded on the palate with well pitched acidity and fine-grained tannins. A pleasant and attractive Pinot with a nice dry finish."
-Wine Orbit, July 2009
